Back of the Barn Quilt Block Pattern

Back of the Barn Quilt Block Pattern

"...early barn quilts have been referred to as “painted prayers..."

“The Halifax County Barn Quilt Trail: Our Community Quilt.” Go Halifax, March 31, 2025. https://gohalifaxva.com/the-halifax-county-barn-quilt-trail-our-community-quilt/.

One of these days I'm going to own a barn, and that barn is going to have a big, beautiful quilt block painted on it.

Until then, I'll have to be satisfied admiring this wonderful medium of folk art that other's create.

And I'll keep dreaming about the block I'll someday paint to share with the world ❤️

Back of the Barn

Imagine an afternoon drive through country roads — maybe right outside of Green Hills — on a crisp winter day. Snow patches reflect the sun’s golden rays, horses frolic in the pastures, and every barn boasts a beautiful quilt block, painted in bold, vibrant colors.

That vision is my inspiration for Back of the Barn, a traditionally pieced house block with a twist: it features a staple seen on many barns across America. The barn quilt for this block pattern can be a miniature version of any block; I chose the Road to Oklahoma with holiday fabrics from AGF Studio’s 2025 “Christmas in the Cabin” collection.

Have fun using up scraps to build this block, or create it in the gorgeous Christmas collection prints and solids shown in the pattern by purchasing a fabric kit from my online shop. The kit includes a skinny quarter of the pale pink poinsettia fabric and a skinny eighth in each of the remaining seven fabrics. You'll have enough fabric to make two 12"x12" (finished size) Back of the Barn blocks with a little stash left over for another project.

No matter what fabric you pull, I can't wait to see your block and how you showcase the Back of the Barn!
